2012 self build

Blogs - MyBlog

New year has dawned, but the build is still stuck in 2011.  The timber frame company has struggled to get to grips with our unusual house, and are having to keep returning to sort out issues, the main one at the moment being our roof.  Until we get the guttering sorted, we cannot put the Zinc roofing on, which means we are still not watertight.  Plus the windows have still not arrived, so we cannot keep the rain out, and dry out all the blockwork.  It is a good job that it is dry at the moment as we can open the house up to the wind and let the air blow through.  Pete and I are keeping busy with going to the plot and tidying up all the mess that appears - despite it feeling that nothing is happening, there still seems to be lots of rubbish to tidy up.  The carpenters are working hard to fix the larch boarding and getting the window openings ready for the windows.

On the plus side,  we have moved forward with sorting out the kitchens and bathrooms, which feels like a milestone.  We have not set anything in stone yet, but after tramping around show room after showroom, I was worried we would not be able to make a decision, as there was choice overload!  The amount of kitchens and bathrooms that look so similar was daunting to say the least, but we are hoping that we have now settled on one supplier.  At one point we were considering moving into the house without having a kitchen and only one toilet, so it would be a real bonus to have all the rooms ready for our move.  The move date is creeping backwards, though we still hope to move out of rental by the end of April.  Even if it means moving in with the builders, it will feel so good to have our own place again.
