Unauthorised encampment - update
Wednesday, 16 May 2012 15:02
From Cllr Alan Connett
County Councillor for Exminster
T:01626 891564
Slow progress is being made in getting the Highways Agency to end the unauthorised encampment on land just to the side of the motorway bridge as you drive out of the village… but we continue working away to get the Agency to take responsibility.
For about the past five or so weeks a group of people have been using the land and you may well have seen the muddy wheel marks and the broken down fence.
Today, the Highways Agency apologised – they have not appointed solicitors to take legal action -- which is different to what they said a couple of weeks ago.
The people using the land are not Gypsies or Travellers but are homeless. However, at my request Teignbridge Council housing officers visited and have confirmed that the people do not have an entitlement to emergency accommodation.
In addition, Teignbridge Council is bringing pressure on the Highways Agency and at the next meeting of the council’s planning committee, I have been told there will be a report for councillors to consider with a view to authorising enforcement action on the Highways Agency to end the encampment.
This is a snap-shot summary of a lot of activity by me along with Exminster Parish Council. If you’d like more information, please get in touch. I will keep email subscribers up to date with progress.
Regards
Alan
